You won’t see many of these players in an NFL uniform on a Sunday afternoon, but while you’re sitting there with your friends and family watching the big game with a bowl of snacks in your lap, the men who played football for Army at West Point are holding up much bigger lines than what the pros are holding up on your TV screen, and they are doing it all over the globe. Army football players prepare for a bigger game, and they do it for you, for me and for freedom everywhere. How much do you know about Army football? This program is as rich in tradition as any program in America yet the names are far from household. Dive into West Point Football IQ: The Ultimate Test of True Fandom. While some of you West Point graduates may earn your 5-Stars, others of us will get a good dose of Army football’s long and storied history, a program that continues to produce the men who lead America.
FROM THE AUTHOR
Few football programs – amateur or professional – boast the longevity or enjoy the rich tradition of the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Army football is as American as, well turkey and pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving Day. Beyond Heisman Trophy winners, All-Americans, Hall of Famers and National Champions, the West Point football program has produced leaders that have stood tall on battlefields around the world in defense of the values that make America great, players who have influenced and made history in venues far larger than a football stadium.
Army players touch a plaque before each home game inscribed with these words from General George C. Marshall, the Chief-of-Staff of the U.S. Army in World War II: “I want an officer for a secret and dangerous mission. I want a West Point football player.” The plaque is there to remind these young athletes that there will indeed come a time for more important things than making a goal line stand or converting a fourth-and-long in the waning sunlight of a crisp, autumn afternoon on the banks of the Hudson River.
Perhaps this volume of questions will brighten the day of an old warrior who can recall a fond memory of his days in service when he stood shoulder to shoulder with his brothers-in-arms. Perhaps it will encourage some young and promising athlete to explore the opportunities at West Point.
Regardless, I hope every person who enters this book will find entertainment and value in the pages.
